Smart Growth: Harrisburg's Path to Sustainable Development

New Leadership Era Ignites Growth Enthusiasm in Harrisburg

Harrisburg has entered a new era of leadership, marked by infectious enthusiasm that resonates throughout the city. The HEDC Development Committee, led by the dynamic group of Marcus Mahlen, Leap Chear, Tina Heeren, and Bryce Healy, hosted an engaging meeting in March that drew a diverse array of attendees. Representatives from the City of Harrisburg, officials from Sioux Falls, and influential development companies were present, all eager to explore the promising future of growth and development in Harrisburg.

These key community figures gathered to absorb the inspiring "grow smart" message that resonated throughout the meeting. The newly appointed City Administrator, Amanda Mack, alongside Deputy Administrator Heath VonEye, shared their vision for steering the city toward a promising trajectory. The excitement surrounding this new leadership team aims to establish a positive tone for development initiatives and instill a sense of optimism among developers regarding Harrisburg's future.

Key Focus Areas for Future Development

Deputy Administrator VonEye highlighted three critical focus areas for guiding the city’s development:

  • Regulations

  • Process and Procedures

  • Opportunities and Challenges

A pivotal moment occurred when Administrator Mack posed a vital question to the developers present: "What can we do better?" This inquiry opened the floor for constructive dialogue, allowing stakeholders to express their needs and expectations. The developers responded with a clear and straightforward request: "Provide us with the criteria and rules." This seemingly simple yet profound request highlights the importance of clarity and transparency in the development process, which will help streamline the approval process for future projects and foster a more collaborative environment.

A Vision for Sustainable Growth

Leap Chear confidently stated that significant growth for Harrisburg is not just a possibility but an inevitability. However, he emphasized the necessity of having a well-defined vision for that growth to ensure it unfolds in a smart and sustainable manner.

Administrator Mack's vision for the city is rooted in smart growth strategies prioritizing harmony and alignment within the City Administration, aiming to create a cohesive, vibrant, and thriving community.

As the community moves forward, the call to learn valuable lessons from the past and embrace present opportunities resonates strongly. This new leadership team invites everyone to join in this exciting journey toward a brighter and more prosperous future for Harrisburg.
